Picked on the 2nd March, this delicious expression of Mornington Chardonnay hails from the south-facing Merricks Grove vineyard, where the grey sandy loams are marbled with red ironstone.

Up here the altitude (for Mornington) and coastal breezes seem to compress the wines' fruit, giving a more coiled mouthfeel, while the ironstone soils gift a more savoury, mineral-noted wine when compared with the Tuerong Chardonnay.

In terms of winemaking, this is hand harvested, hand sorted and whole bunch pressed. Natural fermentation is on high solids with partial malolactic retaining good freshness. Barrel fermented in 500-litre puncheons (20% new François Frères), the wine is matured on lees for 10 months before bottling. Over to you Mr. Mattinson.

"Merricks is one of the cooler sites in Mornington Peninsula terms. This is right up there. It has that extra edge. It tastes of grapefruit and fig, spice and mineral - and a few other things besides - but it's set apart by the intensity, the polish, the exclamation mark of the finish. Straight to the pool room with this one." 96 points, Campbell Mattinson,
