"The NV Extra Brut Ultradition is a gorgeous wine at its level, and also a terrific introduction to the Laherte Champagnes. Translucent and energetic, the LAHERTE FRÈRES - Champagne Ultradition has a lot to offer. Pear, almond and dried flowers meld together as this creamy, ample Champagne shows off its distinctive personality. The flavours are brilliant and chiseled throughout. What a gorgeous wine this is. The Ultradition is based on Meunier (unusual for a NV Champagne), with 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir."

2016 base, disgorged in January 2019.
LAHERTE FRÈRES entry Champagne continues its skywards trajectory (like all of this producer's wines). This current release is comfortably the finest LAHERTE FRÈRES - Champagne Ultradition we have stocked. It was made from both biodynamic and organically picked fruit. There are now two reserve vintages blended in, giving more complexity and oomph. The current release is based on 2016 with the reserve wines coming from 2015 and 2014.
The reserve wines now make up 40% of the blend (a key to the leap in quality), with 60% comprising barrel-aged material. In terms of the varietal mix, the blend remains 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir from a total of seven different parcels across the Côteaux Sud d'Épernay and Vallée de la Marne, namely Chavot, Mancy, Morangis, Le Breuil, Boursault, Moussy and Vaudancourt. The average age of the vines is 30 years.
LAHERTE FRÈRES naturally ferments the wines in a mixture of vessels, including two 50-hl Rousseau tronconique casks, old barrels, foudre and concrete. The wines are always on lees and the malolactic fermentation is partially completed (around 60-70% on average). Dosage is only 4 g/L.
This is simply a top value grower wine; bright, pure and juicy with loads of delicious red currant, apple skin Meunier fruit, and a punchy, mineral close. The quality being delivered for this price is outstanding.
LAHERTE FRÈRES have created a range of authentic, pure and unique Champagne wines – authentic like our land, pure like our terroir and unique like our work. At LAHERTE FRÈRES, the expression “terroir wine” takes on full significance.
Today, 80% of the estate’s wines are fermented and matured in wooden receptacles (we own about 350 oak barrels, as well as 6 casks and 1 truncated-cone tank). This enables us to preserve and highlight the features of each locality and to let grow our wines, coming from 75 plots.
We think that the best way to make the most of our terroir is to reveal its intimate personality through our wines. Massal selection, plot by plot vinification, immediate and delicate pressing, and minimal dosage are key elements of our wine-growing strategy.
Because we are passionate about what we do, we follow a largely hands-off approach to allow the terroir to display its whole character. From the deep roots of the land to the cellar, we are continually striving to highlight the true nature of our vines. This conscious and sensitive approach, that has always been close to our hearts, shapes each and every LAHERTE FRÈRES cuvée.
Throughout the year, LAHERTE FRÈRES are fully dedicated to their vines and follow carefully their development. They are constantly on the watch to better appreciate their natural beauty, by observing, feeling, tasting, listening, touching.
The Grassl' Vigneron Mineralité glass’s design, with an ample bowl to assist with allowing the wine to open is complimented by a narrowing chimney bringing focus and precision to the nose. The Mineralité glass is ideal for acidic wines with verve.
