Shiraz
Sourced exclusively from the 1974 planted block of shiraz at the western-most extremity of the vineyard. 100% shiraz. Equipoise to the No. 2. Drawn from soils with a higher clay base than the No. 2 thus wines generally more brooding and masculine, offering darker fruits/spice and chewier tannins with distinctly more savoury undertones. A higher percentage of stalks are added back to the ferments to lend juiciness plus extra cut and persistent tannin to the sweeping finish. Displays a signature iron/gravel earthiness that belies its roots in New World ground.
James Halliday says:
Very high quality cool-grown shiraz from 30+-year-old vines; spice, damson plum and blackberry fruit are seamlessly framed by French oak and exemplary tannins; surges on the long finish. Cork.
14.5% alc. Rating 95 Drink 2021 Date Tasted Dec 08
